A Portland-bound Amtrak train from Seattle derailed near DuPont Monday morning, closing southbound Interstate 5.

Pierce County Sheriff’s Office Detective Ed Troyer said there were multiple fatalities and injuries, but declined to provide exact numbers. No motorists were killed, he said.

There were around 78 passengers and five crew members on the train, Amtrak said.

CHI Franciscan Health said 77 people – which likely also includes motorists – have been transported to nearby hospitals.
